JOHN MELLENCAMP
IT'S ABOUT YOU
IT'S ABOUT YOU
John Mellencamp has a long history of hiring people based on instinct rather than experience. That instinct is what led him, in 2008, to approach my dad, a photographer with no background in filmmaking, about documenting his upcoming baseball field tour. The tour traveled alongside Willie Nelson and Bob Dylan, creating a moving and unconventional backdrop for the story that unfolded.

John did not want a large film crew, so it became a two person project. My dad and I loaded up a few cameras and followed the tour for more than six weeks and twelve thousand miles in a rented minivan that trailed the tour bus. Along the way, John was also recording his album No Better Than This in historic locations across the country, so we filmed everything as it naturally appeared around us.

In the beginning we were told there would be an editor waiting for us at the end of the journey, but that responsibility ultimately became ours. Nearly two years of filming, reviewing, and piecing together hundreds of hours of footage eventually shaped the film It’s About You.
